This is a very important interview. The problem comes from the typical Western understanding of peoples from the Middle East. And why not? As Said pointed out before, the Western psyche has been bombarded by images and notions about the "Arab" for centuries. Zizek makes the great pint about Blair's notion that Arab speaking people are barbarous and need to be contained. And of course, there is also the fear that Arab speaking people will somehow become advanced like us and then ridiculed that they are not like us despite the fact that they try to be like us. The difference is that we often prevent the very advances that they appear to desire. This perfectly demonstrated in the film "Iron Man". The Islamic terrorists are trying to get Stark to develop a weapon on par with the United States. Furthermore, they have been amassing Stark weaponry. Of course, Iron Man eventually destroys the weapons and "rescues" the passive victims from the Middle East. Moreover, when Obadiah Stane travels to the terrorists, he tells their leader that technology is the very thing separated the East from the West. We have the entire situation played out in this film.
